Chapter 13
A Splash of Color on Your Wall, As Well As Your Heart
Travis
“My dress is olive green.” Jil ian leaned across the table; I could hear her smiling at me.
“Congratulations.” I continued working on my formula, not bothering to look at her.
“You have to match me.” She sounded annoyed.
“Why would I have to match?” Now I was annoyed.
“Because you are my escort.” She rested her face in her hand.
“I’m taking Gia to the dance.” I stared at her. She looked at her fingernail polish, stil annoyed.
“Whatever. But on the float, and when we are announced at the dance, you are my escort.” She spoke as though she was explaining it to a four-year-old.
“I thought Mason could escort you. I could escort Courtney.” It’s not like it mattered who was whose escort; it would only be one dance. She scowled at me.
“No, Mrs. Hendricks assigned us, mostly by height, but she said we couldn’t change. Mason is escorting Courtney, you are escorting me, and my dress is olive green.” She final y turned to her work.
It looked as though Alex and Kiarah hadn’t made up yet when we al assembled at lunch. She sat across the room with some of her friends. She kept looking toward Alex who sat beside me. He looked down at his tray as though it was the most important, confusing thing he’d ever seen.
Mason and the guys were engrossed in a conversation about the latest Monday night footbal game. I would have been right there in the middle of it, had I not been thinking about Gia, who kept glancing at her brother. I knew she was worried about him. He stood and took his tray ful of food to dump at the return. There was stil fifteen minutes of lunch left. Gia fol owed him, and I, of course, fol owed her. I was steps behind her, when she found him in the hal way.
“She’s going to make up with you.” She put her hand on the back of his shoulder as she caught up to him.
“I just don’t need this right now.” He pul ed away as he turned to face her and leaned against the lockers. “I screwed up. I should have never gone after him.” I leaned against the lockers across the hal from them. I might as wel not have even been there; they didn’t even acknowledge my presence.
“You did what you felt was right at that time. I’m not mad at you. I’m sure she wil understand.” She stroked his arm trying to comfort him.
“I don’t care about her; I’m angry with myself. I gave into that anger. I’m just like HIM.” He rested his head against the locker and looked at the ceiling.
“You are NOTHING like him.” She stared at him, not believing what he said.
“Because I hit a boy instead of a woman?” He turned to look at her.
“Because you are NOTHING like him,” she repeated. He hugged her.
“I needed that,” he said. Then he looked over to me.
